The space combat simulator Freelancer is a direct sequel to Microsoft’s Starlancer. An open-world setting distinguishes Freelancer from its predecessor. As a spiritual successor to Origin Systems’ Wing Commander: Privateer, it is often regarded as Wing Commander’s inventor Chris Roberts’ game.

A freelance pilot named Edison Trent survives an attack on the space station Freeport 7. After losing the deal of a lifetime in the assault, Trent teams up with Jun’ko ‘Juni’ Zane of the Liberty Security Force, and they begin exploring the events that followed.

As certain storyline objectives are completed, Trent is free to do whatever he likes, such as sightseeing, trading, or smuggling. Various groups populating the 48-star systems of the game can also offer freelance combat assignments to him.

A good deal of detail has been put into the star systems themselves. In addition to brilliant, blazing stars, nebulae, hazardous asteroid fields, and vast swaths of space debris, there is a large array of planets awaiting exploration.

One of the most outstanding features of Freelancer is its control scheme. Because the game can be controlled by a keyboard and mouse, there is no need for a joystick. While holding down the left mouse button, you can change the ship’s direction by moving the mouse while holding down the forward key. The right mouse button activates the ship’s weapons while the aiming crosshair is dragged across the screen. The game becomes immediately approachable because of this.
