The story of Freedom Warriors takes place in a universe where the Soviet Union has won the Cold War. The streets of America are now the scene of a furious war. Shortly after a nuclear missile is launched at Washington, D.C., Red Army forces are streaming across the borders of Mexico and Canada. When breaking news reports that the Russians have invaded the country and killed their President, chaos ensues.
The protagonist of the game is a blue-collar worker who transforms into a charming and daring freedom warrior driven by an obsession with finding and liberating his brother, who the Soviets have imprisoned along with other New Yorkers. To combat the Soviet threat in New York City’s streets, you must assemble and command an army of urban guerillas. Gameplay in FreedomFighters has two levels: An action mode that takes place in the streets where violent battles are fought and won, and where resources are acquired, and a strategic turn-based game that is centered on base operations in a subterranean sewer system.
