Essentially, it is a third-person action shooter. There are at least five types of attacks available to the robots: light weapons, heavy weapons, melee attacks, throwing objects such as vehicles, lamp posts, trees, etc., and the ability to use long objects like lamp posts as swords. In certain missions, the player must race to particular points within a time limit or before any characters from the other group do. This is because the title and characters suggest a robot can change into a vehicle, giving the game some racing features.
As a player explores each region, he or she unlocks trailers, production images, and color schemes for certain characters. This is done by completing side missions, obtaining Energon cubes, and collecting emblems dispersed across the city.
