It was originally released as Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided, which was a sci-fi MMORPG from developers. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back was set between Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, with planets borrowed from the fictional Star Wars universe. All of the species and professions mentioned in Star Wars media could be chosen during character creation.
In Star Wars Galaxies, players could attack enemies, complete quests/missions, craft useful items, and/or entertain others using their characters’ skills. There were many features offered in the game, including the ability to meet Star Wars NPCs, travel inland speeders, speeder bikes, and swoops, control economies, earn fame and fortune (or notoriety and infamy), obtain rare items, artifacts, and trinkets, and construct houses, canteens and guild halls, as well as own and decorate their own structures.
In fact, players could even run entire cities from these structures. In addition to Jump to Lightspeed, Rage of the Wookies, and Trials of Obi-Wan, the game has received several expansions since its release. The expansions were followed by the introduction of a trading card game, Champions of the Force, with its own expansions. December 2011 marked the closure of Star Wars Galaxies.
