One of the most successful video game franchises has been the Call of Duty series, a first-person shooting game that guides you through past, present, and future wars. It also has been the top-selling shooting game franchise in video game history. However, the series seems to have reached its ceiling in terms of gameplay. What has their issue been, and how can they correct themselves to create a new ceiling?
Sometimes understanding video game market trends can feel like you are observing some NFL odds. Make sure to get into the action, and we can figure out how to solve some of CoD’s biggest issues.
Reliance on Remastered Games
Nostalgia is a hell of a drug, and the companies making video games understand that completely. That is why we are seeing so many games re-made and giving the characters and/or game style a bit of a twist while bringing it in front of a potentially bigger audience.
The remastered version of the classic Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 title is set to release in October 2022, a full 13 years after its initial launch.
This might attract newer players who were not playing the game during the heyday of the game’s life but can do more harm than good. Modern Warfare 2 is arguably the top game in the series and brings back many memories for gamers who have played both.
However, that can be an issue as that means they will go in with extremely high expectations, and if it fails to hit that, that brings a lot of different issues up.
Prestige Mode
Prestige mode is one of the better things to improve the online experience. In the first few games, you would have to reach the maximum level (typically 55) and then reset to prestige level 1 and go through the process until you hit max prestige, and once that happens.
However, the newer versions of the game reset your level to one after the season concludes. That makes the game a little less fun as everything you worked for is immediately taken away from you.
Prestiging online is optional as they have been giving players the chance to increase their rankings and make their players have the fun of doing it repeatedly. This is a fun feature that they completely changed and has been universally panned as it does not seem to be extending the game’s life.
Battle Pass
The battle pass has been something that seems to be a newer feature in Call of Duty as they reward players playing that purchased the Battle Pass. The season typically lasts around 40 days, which makes it a little annoying as you need to pay to get some rewards for playing the game, and the season pass will repeat rewards throughout the seasons as the game goes on.
Forcing players to pay for the ability to play the game online and map packs and now a battle pass makes it seem a little too much money needed to make sure you can play the game and get all the rewards possible. This has driven a vocal minority of players away from the game as they feel the game is deteriorating rapidly.
Closing
Call of Duty was once one of the kings in the gaming world as players would log thousands of hours attempting to become prestige masters and get incredible kill streaks and things of that nature. It now feels like the heart of Call of Duty has been taken away and needs to be recaptured.
It’s only a matter of time until they reach the breaking point they can no longer return from. What would you like to fix in the Call of Duty franchise? Do you think there is a future for Call of Duty games in the upcoming future, or are the best days of the game behind us?
